micro-organisms: possible role in pathogenicity

چکیده

Five bacterial species considered to be potential pathogens in acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and pneumonia-Branhamella catarrhalis, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pneumoniae-were evaluated for their potential to synthesise histamine in vitro. Bacterial species commonly isolated from infected sputum but generally not considered to be pathogenic-Enterobacteriacae, Neisseria pharyngis, coagulase negative staphylococci, a-haemolytic streptococci, and Candida albicans-were similarly studied. Ofthe "pathogens", the Gram negative species B catarrhalis, Hparainfluenzae and Ps aeruginosa synthesised clinically important amounts of histamine; this was not the case for the Gram positive species S aureus and S pneumoniae. Of the "non-pathogenic" species, only the Enterobacteriacae, as a group, were found to synthesise clinically important amounts of histamine. These results show that some Gram negative bacteria, associated with acute exacerbations in respiratory infections, produce histamine and possibly other inflammatory mediators, which may contribute to their pathogenecity in the lower respiratory tract in vivo.

Probiotic bacteria: safety, functional and technological properties.

During the past two decades probiotic (health promoting) micro-organisms have been increasingly included in various types of food products, especially in fermented milks. Several aspects, including safety, functional and technological characteristics, have to be taken into consideration in the selection process of probiotic micro-organisms. Safety aspects include specifications such as origin (...

Role of Proteeae in diarrheal disease.

The recent paper by H. E. Muller (3) on the role of the Morganella-Proteus-Providencia group in diarrheal disease raises some important points. Previous reports have speculated on the role of these organisms in gastrointestinal disease (1, 2, 4). To date, no specific mechanism of pathogenicity has been described which links the Proteeae with infectious diarrhea. The prevalence study reported by...

HtrA in Porphyromonas gingivalis can regulate growth and gingipain activity under stressful environmental conditions.

In several micro-organisms, HtrA, a serine periplasmic protease, is considered an important virulence factor that plays a regulatory role in oxidative and temperature stress. The authors have previously shown that the vimA gene product is an important virulence regulator in Porphyromonas gingivalis. Further, purified recombinant VimA physically interacted with the major gingipains and the HtrA ...

Influence of ovarian hormones on urogenital infection.

Numerous studies have examined the influence of hormones on infectious diseases and there is now a wealth of data relating to the more specific effect of the sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone, on urogenital infections. The interaction between these hormones and the immune system is complex and the variation of hormonal effect between species further complicates the true picture as relate...
